Thriller books in the obooko collection will be written to build suspense and excitement while heightening the reader's anticipation and anxiety right up until the story climax. Often, key elements that would help the reader solve or reveal aspects of the plot are deliberately hidden or withheld in order to confuse; or left in full view to distract and mislead by using literary devices like Red Herrings and MacGuffins.

As the name suggests, Thrillers are written to provide thrills. A good author will be adept at building tension and suspenseful excitement punctuated with elements of surprise, to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. It is the suspense factor that keeps the reader engrossed and wanting more until the story climax. It's what make's a good thriller on obooko unputdownable.

You will notice that the thriller books on obooko will contain many different character types, which are given believable form by our talented authors. The protagonists are usually serving or ex police officers, government agents, private detectives, ex-military personnel and of course tough, resourceful men and women with dark, troubled pasts. They are accustomed to danger and have an enviable repertoire of mental and physical skills we would all like to possess! These are the 'hero' types we most like to identify with.

Mystery books are different because they are written in a style that engages the reader in a way that they become much more than an observer: they assume part of the investigative component of the story; trying to figure out from the facts, who committed the crime or offence. whodunnit! The author will use a variety of plot techniques and devices, many similar to those used in thrillers, but with more emphasis on concealing the identity of the perpetrator or concealing facets of a crime in order to keep the reader guessing. The primary character is usually a detective or private eye, who in order to solve the crime, compiles a list of suspects likely to have motive and opportunity. In some mystery novels there does not have to be a crime: the protagonist is tasked to find the reason why something has occurred, as in supernatural mysteries.
