Ebooks are easy to make and more likely to be read
The most economical way to create books is of course by producing an ebook, because the publisher (that's you) does not incur the costs of traditional printing, binding, packing and shipping.
Let's imagine you ventured down the usual self-publishing route and had your book printed traditionally or by POD (Print on Demand;) you list it on one of those monster websites and hope for the best. Great, your name's in print! But as an unknown author with no ratings and a book that probably costs more than a high-street bestseller, how many will you sell? In reality, the major self-publishing websites are flooded with books that remain unsold and more importantly, unread.
The main attraction of e-books is that they are available instantly: no trips to bookstores or waiting for the post to arrive. And they can be downloaded free from obooko at any hour of the day.
All of our members have access to a computer but only a few will have the financial resources to purchase a handheld eBook reader. Therefore, to provide for the majority, our format of choice is PDF (Portable Document Format) because this is the the most accessible and versatile cross-platform format. It also provides the closest simulation of a printed work; retaining cover art and page layout properties rather than being pure digital text. PDFs also have a wealth of useful features; for instance the type size can be enlarged, you can bookmark pages and, most importantly, print them on your home printer, What's more, Adobe PDFs have a Read Aloud function which actually reads the book to you!

When you prepare your book for submission it will have to be converted from your word-processing file into a PDF file to reduce size and make it cross-platform compatible. If you can't do this directly from your software you will need to download one of the PDF Writers below or use the online PDF Converter.
