Recuerdo, the second of two novels in Holzman's An Argentine Tragedy, deals with the children of Argentina's "disappeared" under the 1976-1983 military dictatorship. Buenos Aires, 1977: thousands of civilians are "disappearing" in the junta's secret terror campaign to crush dissent. When a government death squad kills her son-in-law and abducts her family members, Miriam Rosen, a middle-class grandmother, begins a lifelong battle to find her children and grandchildren. Her quest is interwoven with the 2010 story of Kelly Martinez, a young Philadelphia doctor on her own quest for her birth family. Along their journeys to the truth, Miriam and Kelly will learn the dark secrets that haunt a country's collective memory to this day.
