find out how and why the obooko website stores online data

Here, we show you how the site uses data to enhance your membership experience and how third party advertisers may collect non-personal statistics.

Online Privacy and the use of Cookies

What information do we collect?

We collect information from you only when you register for a free account. When registering on the obooko website you will be asked to enter your first name only, your email address, country and gender. We do not ask for your surname, private address, telephone number or any other sensitive data. Your password is hash-protected and known only by you. We guarantee the information we hold, especially your email address, will never be sold, exchanged, transferred, nor given to any other company or person for any reason whatsoever, without your written consent. It will be used only for the purpose of delivering transactional email associated with your account.

What do we use your information for?

Information we collect from you may be used in one of the following ways:

  • To personalize your experience on obooko: for instance, greeting you by name in transactional email.
  • To improve our website: we continually strive to improve our website offerings based on the information and feedback we receive from you.
  • To improve obooko customer service: your information helps us to more effectively respond to your customer service requests and support needs.
  • To administer a contest, promotion, survey or other site feature.
  • To send transactional email messages regarding your obooko membership account, for instance, your welcome letter, change password notification, lost password notification, email address updated notification.
  • To keep a record of book submissions: if you are an author we will retain a copy of your submission form as a record of your permission for us to distribute your work on the obooko platform.

Currently, we do not send email other than essential transactional messages. We never send unsolicited email. Should we decide in the future to send a monthly newsletter to keep you updated, we will first ask your permission to do so; this is referred to as opting-in.

How to unsubscribe
You may unsubscribe from receiving email correspondence from obooko at any time. However, because transactional email is essential to manage your account, this will also terminate your free membership. To unsubscribe/delete account, please select the Close Account form in your account menu. Job done! All your data is instantly removed from our system.

How do we protect your information?
We implement a variety of security measures to maintain the safety of your personal data whenever you enter and submit details via our online forms or by email.

Do we use cookies?
Yes. Our membership system uses session cookies to recognise you. Our session cookies are completely harmless: they are not written or stored on your hard drive and do not collect any information from your computer. They expire at the end of your browsing session on obooko and become inaccessible after your session has been inactive for around 20 minutes. Third party cookies: We also use the services of Google Analytics to collect information about how visitors use our site. The cookies used by Google Analytics include anonymous, non-personal information including where a visitor has linked from, the browser they are using, the pages they visit and the screen size of their device. You will also find advertising on the site by major advertising networks including Google Adsense, which will use cookies. You can access the privacy policies of these networks via the 'AdChoices' (blue triangle) link found in an upper or lower corner of their adverts.
