In the year of 1723, the condemned pirate, William Benton, is languishing in Newgate Prison awaiting his appointment with death at Execution dock. To bide his time he gives an account of his fantastic adventures to a naïve young journalist called Nathaniel Bagshaw, who aims to publish a popular book on pirate histories. Benton tells of the incredible fate of his ship, Dream Chaser, commanded by the fearless Captain Ironside. His story begins in 1718, not long after the demise of the pirate stronghold of Nassau, whose inhabitants were torn between accepting the King's pardon or pursuing the precarious life of a sea rover. Captain Ironside and his crew chose the latter and are forced to sail into an unknown future. Fortune seems to smile on them when they sight a Spanish galleon, which was separated from the treasure fleet by a storm, but during the pursuit both the vessel they are chasing and Dream Chaser are enveloped by an unexpected, eerie mist. When they emerge from its depths they find themselves no longer familiar lands, but in an unknown and mysterious territory. Struggling for their lives, they attempt to return to familiar waters with or without the Spanish treasure.
