A small collection of poems about Nature and God, the trials and tribulations of life, with a hopeful message.
Heavy Oxen
Sweat on the brow
Oxen heavy and tired
A farmer knows his limit
Eternal days of summer
Frogs in the swamp
Earth worms on the pavement
Rain washes them clean
Tadpoles now yawn
So much work to do
Plowing and seeding
Rabbits find a clearing
Puffy clouds
And irritated spiders
Spin webs
And pretend
Singer sewing machines are
Freshly lubricated with oil
Even the spiders find
A destiny so tireless
That a scarecrow fidgets
His shirt flying in the wind
Hungry people on the farm
Know a day’s work
“You open Your hand and
Satisfy the desire of every
Living thing.”
Up North
Sweet up north
Where I went to college
Soccer games
And dropped out of trigonometry
But sweet up north
With its clean soul
A good doctor friend
With love to lend
Good agrarian people
Wearing overalls to church
Cattle and sheep in the fields
Days of snow
Lasted forever
But the sun came out
It always comes out
Mother and father
Proud of their children
But never see them anymore
The price of going to war
Up north
For a college degree
“If we live in the Spirit, let us
Also walk in the Spirit.”
(Gal 5:25)
