Excerpt from the book:
Genai grew up in Eagle Hall, St. Michael. Her parents were humble and loving. Always there when someone was hungry or needing money to pay a bill or needing somewhere to sleep. Many evenings she came home from school to find a woman and children at the table eating or someone cleaning up around the house in exchange for food.
Her father was a hard-working man. He was the manager at a manufacturing company for 34 years and was ready to retire. It was the only job he ever had. He was 16 when started as a porter lifting crates onto a truck for delivery and everyone loved him. He studied everything he could get his hands on and worked his way up the ranks. He met Genai's mother Genine when he was 20 and although she would just smile as she passed by on her way to school, he knew she was meant for him. One day he got up the courage to say hello.
"Good evening Miss, I would like to take you out on a date with your parent's permission and yours as well."
"Well then, you can walk me home."
Genine and Malcom walked and talked for 20 minutes and when they got to her house, there were lots of people there, the police and an ambulance. Genine rushed inside only to find that both her parents were dead. A man desperate for money, climbed the back fence and went into the house not knowing someone was at home. Her mother screamed when she saw him and tried to fend him off, he stabbed her twice and her husband hearing the noise rushed in only to receive multiple stab wounds as well.
At first Malcom didn't know how to react but when Genine turned and saw him, she rushed back to him and he held her tightly. When everything died down, most of the officers had left and only close neighbours remained, Genine realised she was now alone.
"What's your name?"
"Malcom Watson, what's yours?"
"Genine Broomes."
"I have to call my mom and let her know I will be late, do you have a phone?"
"In the living room next to the archway, funny, it hasn't rang since I got home and it usually never stops ringing."
Malcom let her go and went to make the call. The Broomes' household was nice and cosy, very suitable for a family. Nothing was out of place and it was not cluttered with unnecessary things. He told his mom what had happened and said he would be home when Genine was okay or close to it.
When he got back to her, she was thanking someone and waving goodbye.
"That's the last of them, I'm all alone now. What am I going to do?"
"Marry me."
"I don't even know you."
"Marry me and get to know me, I promise you I will do my very best to make you happy."
"I'm only 17."
"I will be 21 in a week, you can come to live with me at my mother's house."
"This house belonged to my parents I'm not giving it up. If you are serious about marrying me, you can live here if their death doesn't bother you."
"Whatever you want is fine with me, just marry me and let me make you happy."
"Yes."
"Come, close up the house and you can stay with me until we get it cleaned up, go pack what you need for tonight."
Genine looked up at Malcom, she never realised how good looking he was until that moment and for some reason she trusted him.
She went inside and packed an overnight bag along with her school things for the next day. They locked up the house and took the bus over to Malcom's home.
"Is this her?" His mother asked as they opened the front door.
"Yes ma, this is her."
"Welcome to the Watson household, it's nice to finally meet you."
"Thank you but what do you mean?"
"Malcom has been saving his money for when you said yes and he started talking about you over a year ago."
Genine spun around to look at Malcom who was standing behind her and broke into tears.
"Oh dear." Said his mother.
"It's okay ma, she is still shaken up about her parents, I only asked her out tonight then I asked her to marry me and she said yes. A whole lot to take in in one night."
"Come child, you are with family, we will take good care of you. Put your things in the bedroom just off the kitchen and I will have something for you to eat in a minute."
Genine turned to face Mrs. Watson and then ran to hug her.
"It's alright child, everything will be just fine, off you go."
Genine nodded and did as she was told. As she sat on the bed she just cried and cried and it's only when she felt a hand on her cheek she realised she had fallen asleep.
"Hey."
"Hi."
"Get a shower and mom has your dinner ready."
"Okay. Thank you."
"Thank me when you say I do." Malcom smiled and left the room. He peeked back in and said "The bathroom is through that door, everything you need is in there."
