The south of the county, with the RiverThames as its southern boundary, lies almost entirely within the chalk range of theChiltern Hills, most of which is classed as anArea of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The county town since the 18th century has beenAylesbury, the market centre for the attractiveVale of Aylesbury, which runs from theChilterns in the south to Buckingham in the north.
