A selection of poetry and verse on a myriad subjects that may have crossed my mind over a number of years.
DAILY MEDITATION
while seated in a treated air train
from which i wish i could refrain
i think about many wond’rous themes
commuting is one of life’s false schemes.
to beat the city’s dirty pollution
crime and speed they think the solution
is to settle on a bushland coast
with clean air and beaches and bush they boast.
while on this subject just stop and think
the answers will really make you shrink
‘cause people when they move up here
don’t leave the environment pure and clear.
they’ve still got their own little dirty minds
and still drive cars of the polluting kinds
they litter the bush with their brick veneer homes
and mar sandy beaches with flotsam and foams.
they willing duplicate the urban sprawl
a similar mess from whence they crawl
with the same visual ugliness as before
the only diff’rence it’s now on the shore.
the silliest thing as I sit and think
to breathe this clean air that shouldn’t stink
to have these luxuries beyond refute
they willingly… ‘lemming like’ commute!
these tired bleary-eyed non-thinking clones
each work day automatic like drones
board silver carriages to take them away
leaving no time for fun or play.
from twelve to fourteen hours a day
for the extra time they get no pay
but they work and breathe the putrid air
of the big city…..they all moved where??
THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES
the numerous memorials neatly list the dead
in the name of “god” they died it is said
they fought in countless battlefields flung afar
defending some hill under a diff’rent star
they faithfully obeyed orders from ones above
fought and killed and died with no hate nor love
all in the name of god for what was right
for liberty and freedom and capitalist might.
both protagonists fought and died for their own beliefs
in the name of their god for future peace
it mattered nought what their politicians decreed
twas the soldiers who fought whether or not they agreed
for their loyalty the final sacrifice they did pay
the killing and being killed not really their forte
has he forgiven their sins done with deadly rods
and do they now sit peacefully beside their gods?
christ taught us peace and the diff’rence ‘tween right and wrong
and not to kill those who maybe getting too strong
is it war or peace that we could expect
if we all treated our neighbours with trust and respect
are we all of this world so untrusting and scared
to treat with scorn those others with views not shared
it makes you wonder if he does come again
will we live in his footsteps or treat him with disdain!
